I've been buying reptiles online for about ten years now and I've definitely noticed some trends. One of the most annoying has to be sellers who tack on an extra 3% if you want to pay using PayPal.
1. PayPal is GOOD for everyone. As a seller, I would rather pay the 3% than wait on people to mail me a check. Checks bounce, cars break down on the way to the post office (lol), and money orders can be faked. And then I have to wait for them to clear before I ship. Too much hassle compared to that email I get from PayPal saying "You have money!".
2. This isn't just tacky and cheap, it's technically against PayPal's terms of service. If you really need that much money out of the animal, then just price it high enough to cover paypal fees - you could even offer a cash discount for people who pay cash or postal money order. Just a thought?
3. Nothing is FREE. Even if they mail you a check, your time has to be worth something! Say you save $8 by taking a money order to the bank. By the time you drive to the bank, wait in line, deposit the check/money order and then drive home, you've surely wasted close to $8 worth of gas and time. That's not to mention your time caring for the animal you just sold for ten days until the check or money order clears.
4. EVERY time I've purchased animals from a seller who charges extra for using PayPal, I've regretted it. I would't say EVERY unless I mean every single time. Be it sick, loaded with mites, wild caught when advertised as CB or a completely different animal, I've never had a good experience with sellers who charge an extra 3%.
Moral of the story... Charging that 3% will easily cost you more in lost sales. Don't do this to your customers, and don't buy from people who do. |
